The Address and Phone section (Section 2) is straightforward — but it has one hard rule that trips people up: no P.O. boxes for your home address. Here's the full breakdown.
The Fields in This Section
Home Address — Street Address Line 1
Physical residential address — no P.O. boxes
Enter your full street address: house/building number, street name, apartment/unit number, floor. Example: "123 Mahatma Gandhi Road, Apartment 4B" or "45 Park Avenue, Suite 1201." The form will reject a P.O. box entry here. This must be a place where you physically reside.
Home Address — City / Town
Enter the city or town where you currently live
Enter the city or town name in English. If your area has a local name and an official English name, use the official one. If there is no official English name, use the closest transliteration.
Home Address — State / Province / Region
Required for countries that have state/province divisions
Enter the state, province, or region. For countries without state divisions (e.g., Singapore, Hong Kong), leave this blank or enter the district/area name.
Zip / Postal Code
Your area's postal code — required for most countries
Enter your postal code. For countries without postal codes, leave this field blank. Some countries have multiple formats — use the format most commonly used in your area.
Country
Your current country of residence
Select your country from the dropdown. This should match your current nationality and passport country.
Mailing Address
Use if mail should go to a different address than your home
If your mailing address is the same as your home address, check the 'Same as Home Address' box. If it differs — for example, you receive mail at a P.O. box or a relative's address — enter the mailing address in full. You cannot use a P.O. box as your mailing address either if your home address is elsewhere; the rule applies to the mailing address field too.
Phone Numbers
Enter with country code — used for urgent case communications
Enter your primary phone number with the country code. Separate fields for: Country Code, Area/City Code, Local Number. If you have only a mobile, enter it as primary. Add a second number (landline or alternate mobile) if you have one. Do not include dashes or spaces within the local number — just the digits.
Common Address Questions
My address doesn't have a street name — what do I enter?
Enter what is available. Some countries use area/landmark addressing rather than street names. Enter the area name, district, nearest landmark, or house number and neighborhood in the Street Address field. Use the Locality field for the city/town. Officers understand that address formats differ globally — as long as your address is accurate and complete for where you live, it will be accepted.
I use a P.O. box for all my mail — can I use it for DS-160?
No — the home address field requires a physical address. For the mailing address: if it's different from your home address and you use a P.O. box for mailing, enter the P.O. box number. The address and phone section is primarily about where you physically live, not where you receive mail. The embassy communicates primarily by email anyway — the address is on record but rarely used for physical mail.
I live with my parents — whose address do I use?
Use the address where you physically live — even if it's your parents' house. Enter the full street address where you currently reside. This does not need to match your passport address or any other document. Your home address on the DS-160 is simply where you live right now.
How do I format my phone number with country code?
Enter the country code in the country code field (e.g., '91' for India, '44' for UK, '1' for US/Canada). In the phone number field, enter the local number without leading zeros. For example: India mobile +91-9876543210 → Country Code: 91, Local Number: 9876543210. UK: Country Code 44, Local Number: 20-7123-4567 → Country Code 44, Area Code 20, Local Number: 71234567.
