The DS-160 is filled out entirely online at the State Department's CEAC portal. Here's the full step-by-step process from opening the form to printing the confirmation page.

The Step-by-Step Process

Step 1 of 8

Go to ceac.state.gov and start a new application

Navigate to ceac.state.gov. Click 'Start New Application.' You will be asked to select your location (the US embassy or consulate where you will apply). Choose the one that has jurisdiction over your place of residence.

You will receive an Application ID (starts with AA — e.g., AA00ABCDE). Write this down in three places: a notes app, an email to yourself, and a printed note. Without this ID, you cannot retrieve your saved application.

Step 2 of 8

Choose and answer a security question

Select a security question from the dropdown (e.g., 'What is your favorite movie?' or 'In what city were you born?'). Enter your answer exactly — you need it to retrieve your application later. Do not use special characters. Spell it consistently every time.

Critical: If you lose both your Application ID and your security question answer, you cannot retrieve the form. Start a new application. This wastes your progress.

Step 3 of 8

Work through all 10 sections

The form has 10 sections. Each page has a 'Save' button at the bottom — click it after completing each page. The form auto-saves every 20 minutes, but always use the explicit save button. Review our guide to each DS-160 section for details on what to enter.

Plan 60–90 minutes total. You can save and return over multiple sessions.

Step 4 of 8

Upload your photo

The photo upload step appears after you complete most of the form. Upload a JPEG that is 600×600 px minimum and under 240 KB. If validation fails: try a different photo, or skip the upload and bring a printed 2×2 photo to your interview instead.

Step 5 of 8

Review the summary page

Before submitting, the form shows a summary of all your answers. Review it carefully. This is your last chance to catch errors. Look especially at: passport number, date of birth, name spelling, travel purpose, and social media list.

Step 6 of 8

Sign and Submit

After reviewing the summary, click 'Sign and Submit.' Read the digital signature certification. Confirm. Once you click confirm, the form is locked — you cannot edit it. Do not rush this step.

Step 7 of 8

Print the confirmation page

After submitting, you will see a confirmation page with a barcode and your photo. Print this immediately — it has two pages. The embassy scans the barcode from the second page at your interview. Print two copies: one for the interview, one as a backup stored separately.

Step 8 of 8

Schedule your interview at ustraveldocs.com

The DS-160 confirmation is used to schedule your visa interview. Go to ustraveldocs.com, register, pay the MRV fee, and schedule your appointment at the same consulate where you filed the DS-160. Bring the confirmation page, your passport, and appointment confirmation to the interview.

Common Online Filing Questions

What if the website times out while I'm filling out the form?
The form auto-saves every 20 minutes. If your session times out before you manually save, the system may have preserved your last saved state. Go to 'Retrieve Application' and enter your Application ID, date of birth, and security question answer. If the auto-save caught your work, you can continue. If not, you may need to restart. Always click 'Save' before stepping away.
Can I file the DS-160 on my phone or tablet?
Technically yes, but a desktop or laptop is strongly recommended. The form has many fields, requires photo upload, and is easier to navigate on a larger screen. Mobile browsers can cause formatting issues with the form. Use Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge on a desktop if possible.
I submitted the wrong DS-160 — can I file a new one?
Yes — file a new DS-160 with the correct information. Bring both confirmation pages to your interview (the old one and the new one). Tell the officer at the start of the interview that you submitted an updated DS-160 and explain why. Correcting the record before the interview is far better than having the error discovered during review.
How do I know my DS-160 was successfully submitted?
You will see a confirmation screen with your Application ID and a barcode. If you receive this, the submission was successful. You will also receive an email confirmation from the State Department. If you don't see the confirmation screen, the submission may not have completed — check your email and try to retrieve the application.

The #1 Rule of DS-160 Online Filing

  • Write down your Application ID immediately — the moment you see it. It's a string of characters starting with AA and you're unlikely to remember it.
  • Save after every page — don't rely on auto-save alone.
  • Never click 'Sign and Submit' until you're sure — once it's locked, it can't be edited.

Before Starting the Online DS-160

  • Have ready: passport, travel itinerary, recent digital photo, school/employer info
  • 5-year employment history with employer names, addresses, and dates
  • 5-year address history
  • List of all social media accounts used in the last 5 years
  • 5-year travel history — every country with passport stamps
  • Names and birthdates of your parents
  • Use a stable internet connection — save after every page
